The bullet tore through the asbestos tile with a deafening CRACK, sending a shower of sharp white debris, burning dust, and splintered wood directly into Ananya’s face.
The heavy lead grazed the skin of her forearm just millimeters from her heart before embedding itself into the concrete ceiling joist behind her.
The sheer concussive blast blew her backward.
She choked on her own gasp, clamping both hands over her mouth as blood began to seep into the sleeve of her hoodie.
Below, the dust began to settle through the fresh bullet hole.
Vikram Kadam stood directly beneath it, his arm still raised, smoke curling lazily from the tip of his suppressed pistol.
He tilted his head, his dark, vacant eyes tracking the faint pitter-pat of white dust drifting down onto his polished leather shoes.
"You missed, Boss," the guard beside him muttered, raising his rifle toward the ceiling. "Let us spray the rafters."
"I don't miss," Vikram said softly, his voice a gravelly, lethal purr that sent a ice-cold shudder through Ananya's entire body.
He lowered the weapon, re-holstering it inside his tailored jacket with terrifying composure. "It was an invitation."
He stepped closer to the bedframe, looking up at the freshly shattered tile.
A dark, predatory smirk carved into his chiseled face.
"She’s bleeding," Vikram murmured, his fingers reaching out to catch a single, tiny droplet of crimson that fell through the hole in the ceiling.
He rubbed the wet blood between his thumb and forefinger, his gaze darkening with a sick, intoxicating fascination.
Slowly, deliberately, he brought his hand to his lips and licked the warm crimson from his skin, his dark eyes never leaving the ceiling above.
"She’s soft. She’s terrified. And she’s running out of air," he purred, a dark, dangerous smile curving his lips. "And she tastes like pure adrenaline."
He looked up into the darkness, his eyes meeting the exact spot where Ananya lay frozen in terror.
"You have thirty seconds to crawl out, little bird," Vikram called out, his tone intimate, almost like a lover sharing a secret in the dark. "Or I burn this building with you inside it."
Above him, Ananya’s phone vibrated violently against her chest.
Tears of sheer adrenaline blurred her vision as she looked down at the cracked screen.
[GHOST]: Do not drop the drive.
[GHOST]: Crawl left. Ten feet. There is a ventilation shaft leading to the neighboring roof. MOVE.
Ananya bit down on her lip until she tasted copper, suppressing a scream of pain as she dragged her wounded arm across the rough joists.
Fiberglass insulation bit into her skin, and jagged rusty nails scraped against her ribs, but she forced herself forward through the suffocating, pitch-black crawlspace.
Down in the room,
Vikram listened. His sharp ears caught the faint, desperate scraping of her body moving through the dust overhead.
He didn't order his men to shoot again. Instead, he let out a low, dark chuckle that vibrated through the floorboards beneath her chest.
"She’s aggressive," Vikram said to his men, a dangerous spark igniting in his eyes. "I like that. Clear the roof. I want to catch her myself."
Ananya reached the rusted iron grate of the ventilation shaft.
Her hands were slick with sweat and her own blood, making her grip slip twice before she managed to wrench the ancient metal loose.
The cold, wet midnight air of Dharavi rushed over her sweaty face.
She shoved her upper body through the narrow opening, scrambling frantically onto the rain-slicked corrugated tin roof of the adjacent building.
She collapsed onto her knees, gasping for air, her lungs burning.
The rain pounded against her skin, washing away the dust and blood.
But as she looked up, her heart slammed straight into her throat.
Standing at the edge of the rooftop, illuminated by the harsh yellow glare of a nearby streetlamp, was a silhouette.
Vikram Kadam was already there.
He walked slowly across the tin roof, entirely unbothered by the pouring rain that soaked his bespoke suit.
The water flattened his dark hair against his skull, highlighting the sharp, cruel angles of his face and the pale scar tracing down his cheekbone.
He looked less like a man and more like a mythical beast claiming its prey.
Ananya backed away on her hands and knees, her boots slipping on the wet metal, until her back slammed against a brick chimney.
There was nowhere left to run.
Vikram stopped just two paces away. He towered over her, sweeping his gaze down her trembling frame from her soaked hair, down to the cut on her cheek, to her hand clutching the USB drive wrapped in the fraying red thread around her wrist.
He slowly knelt in front of her, the tin roof groaning under his weight.
The scent of rain, tobacco, and lethal luxury rolled off him, swallowing her senses.
Vikram reached out with a bare, calloused hand.
Ananya flinched, closing her eyes, waiting for the brutal blow, waiting for him to break her hands just like he had promised.
Instead, his long, leather-gloved fingers gently slid under her jawline.
His touch was surprisingly warm against her freezing, wet skin.
He tilted her face up, forcing her to look into the dark, hypnotic depth of his eyes.
"Look at you," Vikram whispered, his voice a dark, velvety velvet that made her pulse spike uncontrollably. "So small. So fragile. Yet you managed to strip my entire life's work in seventy-two hours."
Ananya’s breath hitched. "K-kill me then," she choked out, her voice trembling despite her effort to sound brave. "You won't get the keys. I'll throw the drive off the ledge."
Vikram’s smirk widened, his thumb moving up to trace the fresh cut on her cheek, wiping away a mix of rain and blood.
His eyes lingered on her lips.
"Kill you?" Vikram purred, leaning in so close she could feel the heat of his breath against her skin. "No, little bird. Death is too merciful for a thief who plays with fire. You stole my secrets. That means your mind, your hands, and your life belong to me now."
He reached down, his heavy hand closing firmly over hers—wrapping around both the USB drive and the thin red thread bound to her wrist.
"And I never give up what’s mine."
The Cage of Silk and Steel
The cold rain continued to pour, washing the blood from Ananya’s wrist down onto Vikram’s bare hand.
But he didn't pull away.
His calloused fingers tightened around hers, pinning her hand—and the USB drive—against the rain-slicked bricks of the chimney.
Ananya’s heart hammered against her ribs so violently she felt sick. "Touch me and I’ll jump," she choked out, her voice shivering, her eyes darting toward the pitch-black abyss off the edge of the roof. "I'll take the ledger with me to the pavement."
Vikram didn't even blink.
Instead, he leaned closer, his massive frame completely eclipsing the moonlight, trapping her in his heavy, intoxicating shadow.
The dark, musky scent of rain, expensive tobacco, and pure danger rolled off him, choking out the smell of Dharavi's stagnant alleys.
"Jump then," Vikram purred, his voice a low, gravelly vibration against her ear that sent a terrifying shiver straight down her spine. "Jump, little bird. Let's see if your body hits the asphalt before my men execute your brother."
Ananya froze. The air left her lungs in a harsh gasp. "You... you don't know where he is..."
A slow, cruel smirk carved into Vikram's face.
He raised his free hand, his bare index finger—still stained with the ghost of her blood—lightly tracing the racing pulse in her neck.
Her skin flushed hot beneath his freezing touch.
"I own this city, Ananya," he whispered, his eyes gleaming with a sick, possessive delight as he felt her pulse spike beneath his fingertip. "Every alley, every gang, every breath you take belongs to me. You thought you were saving him tonight? You were just walking into my cage."
His fingers slid up to her jaw, tilting her head back until she was forced to look directly into his pitch-black, vacant eyes.
"You have two choices," Vikram murmured, his lips brushing the shell of her ear, his tone so dark and intimate it felt like a curse. "You can jump off this roof, die a nobody, and watch your brother bleed out on a livestream... Or you give me that drive, walk into my world, and let me break you properly."
Tears spilled from Ananya’s eyes, mixing with the rain on her cheeks.
She was suffocating, trapped between the absolute terror of the man holding her and the intoxicating, dangerous gravity he pulled her in with.
She squeezed her eyes shut, her fist trembling inside his grip.
Buzz.
The phone in her pocket vibrated once against her hip.
[GHOST]: Do not give him the drive.
[GHOST]: Look at the water tank behind him.
Ananya opened her eyes. Just behind Vikram’s shoulder, mounted on the edge of the roof, was a rusted iron industrial water tank.
The high-tension power cable powering the building's main line was hanging dangerously loose beside it, sparking weakly in the heavy downpour.
If that cable hit the wet tin roof...
Vikram noticed the subtle shift in her gaze. He didn't turn around. He simply chuckled, a low, dark sound of absolute confidence.
"Looking for a miracle?" Vikram mocked gently, his bare hand sliding down her throat to wrap possessively around her collarbone. "There are no miracles in my city, Ananya. Only me."
"Then welcome to hell," Ananya whispered.
With a surge of pure, feral desperation, she didn't try to pull away from him. She lunged forward, slamming her body straight into his chest.
The shock of her sudden movement threw Vikram slightly off balance on the slick tin.
As she collided with him, Ananya reached out with her free hand, grabbing the loose high-tension power cable, and shoved the bare, sparking wire directly into the pool of rainwater at Vikram’s feet.
